Learning Community: Exploring Polarization

Tuesday, November 25, 6:30 pm – American legislatures are more polarized today than at any moment in the past half-century, and there is little end in sight. Two important questions are: Why are American legislatures so polarized? And what policies might help bridge this growing ideological gulf? In the upcoming Learning Community event, Andrew Myers (River Falls Class of 2016 and Stanford PhD candidate in Political Economics) will present his ongoing research that helps address these questions, focusing on campaign finance, local press coverage, election administration, and candidate supply.

It is possible to allow fear and impressions to dominate one’s understanding of issues. This presentation will be a nonpartisan conversation focused on data-driven evidence to help people explore an important challenge of the day. Please come! To register, call First Congregational Church: 425-2052.

Sunday Services Online

On Sunday, October 26, 2025, service attendees reflected on kinds of grief and the many ways people respond to and deal with it.  This impactful discussion is available on our YouTube Channel at  https://uusrf.org/service-videos/. Live-streamed services (Sundays at 10:30) are also available at this link.

River Falls Ministerium MeetingDon Leake was our representative at this month’s meeting.  Plans are progressing for the first transitional housing project in the city which will be located in the parking lot of Luther Memorial Church.  A 501c3 is being formed to oversee this project, and people to serve on the board are needed.  Once the site is established, there will also be a need for volunteers to help it function and help the residents.
In addition, the River Falls Free Clinic is looking for volunteers who can help with  patients by reading or meeting for conversation and friendship during hospital stays.
Talk to Don Leake for more information about these volunteer opportunities.

Social Action Committee UpdateWe have been invited by WUUSAN (Wisconsin Unitarian Universalist Social Action Network) and MUUSJA (Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance) to be part of the UU Common Read training and discussion (see below).  And it’s not too late to join. If you are interested in returning to the important social action work that used to be part of UUSRF, please register for the sessions.  There will be a Social Action Committee meeting after November 20 to discuss what we have learned and what we will do to become a “beacon for social justice” in the St. Croix Valley.   A copy of the book will be available for participants.
For more information, email UUSRFon65@gmail.com and put “Social Action” in the subject heading.
